Codex Reset vs Reset Card: Three Different Clocks

“Reset” gets used for several different things. The distinction explains why a post on X and your account can appear to disagree.

REVIEWED SEPTEMBER 16, 2026 · INDEPENDENT GUIDE

01 / PERSONAL RECOVERY

Your normal allowance schedule

This is the recovery time shown for a limit in your account. Use your own dashboard or CLI status. A public announcement is not required for your personal allowance to recover on its schedule.

02 / ANNOUNCED RESET

An extra reset for a stated group

OpenAI may announce a usage reset. Read the original announcement to see which users it covers, when it takes effect, and whether the rollout is still in progress.

03 / BANKED RESET

A reset you apply from your account

A banked reset, often called a reset card, is credited for later use. Receiving it and using it are separate events. Follow the current account instructions for what it covers, redemption, and expiry.

“A reset was announced. Why am I still limited?”

Check these possibilities in order:

  1. Scope: does the original announcement name your plan or account group? Do not assume a reset for some users includes everyone.
  2. Type: was the announcement about a direct reset, or a banked reset that needs to be applied?
  3. Timing: does the announcement say the change is still rolling out?
  4. Account: are you viewing the same account you use for Codex, and the allowance relevant to your work?

If the announcement clearly covers you and the stated rollout has passed, check your account again and use OpenAI Help for an unresolved account issue.

Can we predict the next official reset?

Limitdesk may publish clearly labeled, subjective probability ranges for possible reset signals. Each estimate names the event, forecast window, evidence for and against it, and review date. These ranges are editorial judgments without historical calibration; they are not confirmed announcements or personal recovery times. Past gaps between resets do not establish a schedule.

It is also useful to separate an announcement time from an account recovery time. A calendar event built from your personal usage page is a personal reminder, not a forecast of OpenAI's next announcement.

Where to check

Visit Tibo's original posts on X for announcements and follow the linked official details. Then check your Codex account for what is available to you.

Keep your own clock handy. Once your account shows a recovery time, you can set a countdown and download a calendar reminder.
